No one really knows how it started. One popular theory is that the first few abominations were prisoners whose death sentence had been faked and had been taken by the government to be lab rats in an experiment to create the ultimate soldier. Another idea floating around claims that the ghouls had always been around, and were responsible for the majority of mysterious disappearances and attacks over the years, until their ranks had swelled to the point where the government just couldn't cover them up anymore. A few of the more religious survivors preach to whoever will listen that the appearance of the damned is the result of God's judgement, the human race's punishment for not believing.

It's been a week since the global disaster. Nations have crumbled, cities have been leveled, and the human race, or what's left of it, have been struggling for survival. Some of them have banded together, sticking to 'strength in numbers' theory while others have convinced themselves that they can survive by themselves. Even when faced with possible extinction, pride still seems to influence people's lives. Various governments have started trying to rebuild their country by deploying armed forces to sweep designated areas and eliminate any undead they come across, while others have abandoned their people and have gone into hiding.
